TEDAŞ-Compliant Battery Rectifier (Battery Charger) Selection Guide: Uninterrupted Power for 110V, 48V and 24V DC Systems

In medium-voltage (MV) transformer substations, electricity distribution facilities and heavy industry, a grid outage must not mean that operations stop. Even when the grid goes down, it is vital that circuit breakers can still trip and close, protection relays keep working and signalling systems stay active. This is where Battery Rectifier Groups (DC Power Supply Units / Rectifiers) come in.

What Is a Battery Rectifier (Battery Charger) and How Does It Work?

Also known on the market as rectifiers, DC battery charging groups or substation rectifiers, these battery rectifiers precisely rectify the alternating current (AC) they draw from the grid into direct current (DC). While supplying the circuit-breaker trip/close coils and motors in the substation, they also keep the connected battery bank (Fully Maintenance-Free Sealed Battery / VRLA AGM / Gel Battery) on continuous float charge.

8 Criteria for Choosing a Battery Rectifier

8 criteria for choosing a battery rectifier: output voltage, output current, battery capacity, backup time, TEDAŞ compliance, communication protocols, IP protection class and operating temperature

Why Is the TEDAŞ 2000/36.C Specification Critical?

For rectifiers used in electricity distribution networks in Türkiye and in projects subject to TEDAŞ standards, full compliance with the MYD / 2000-036.C (or TEDAŞ 2000/36.C) specification is a legal and technical requirement. A rectifier that does not comply with this specification will not be accepted into a substation.

  • Automatic and Manual Charging Modes: The unit should automatically switch between fast charging (boost charge) and float charging (float charge) modes according to the battery’s temperature and voltage.
  • Modbus RS485 / SCADA Communication Integration: It should integrate with remote monitoring systems and instantly report low battery voltage, mains failure or over-temperature alarms to the control centre.
  • Microprocessor-Controlled Stability: The DC output voltage must remain stable even if the AC input voltage fluctuates by 220 VAC ± 15%.

How to Choose the Right Rectifier Voltage

Different DC voltage requirements arise depending on the equipment used on site:

  • 110V DC Rectifiers: The standard solution for supplying high- and medium-voltage substations, high-capacity breaker spring-charging motors and protection relays.
  • 24V DC / 48V DC Rectifiers: Preferred in industrial automation panels, telecom infrastructure, signalling units and small distribution substations.
